Time of Velvet   Leave a comment

It’s a saying in Bakersfield that we never get cooler weather until after the Kern County Fair.  The Fair starts on Wednesday, and it looks like it’s going to cool off a bit early; right in time for fall.

The horses seem to know the cooler weather is coming.  Their coats are already beginning to turn from satin to velvet.  The first sign of a winter coat coming in is the soft velvety gleam that’s at least as beautiful as the shine they’ve had all summer.  Here’s bay Brandy’s shoulder . . .

And here’s EZ’s near-black rump.  He really sparkles.

Their coats will get deeper and richer as the weather cools, but eventually they will be in full winter coat — hairy.

And the seasons turn.  I have some early fall roses, too.

It seems that every living thing is glad that the long hot summer is nearly over!
