The Burnt Buttonwillow   Leave a comment

I got a nice surprise during my walk the other day.  The buttonwillow that burned in the river fire had, at one time,  looked like it was never going to revive.  It was unlucky — an ember got it, but the trees around it (and our firewood pile) were spared.  It had shown a few green sprouts, so we were hopeful.  Buttonwillows are not so common that we can spare one.

I thought I saw something different as I walked by . . .

. . . so I went a little closer . . .

. . . and closer yet.

Yes!  It was flowering.  I approached with caution, as bees really love these spaceship-shaped blossom clusters . . . as you can see.
