More Signs of Spring   Leave a comment

When you first look at the river, you don’t see much in the way of spring.  These cattails from last year, for example . . .

They look pretty dead.  So do the willows across the river.  But when you look more closely . . .

There’s plenty of life around the old Kern.  It’ll just be a little longer now, and there’ll be a veil of green over the whole riverside.  We haven’t had much rain, but there’s enough to keep the trees going.

There’s plenty of activity around the stable, too.  We had to mount a rescue this morning.  One of our newer boarders took a spill and her horse ran in.  I got back from the store in time to catch the call from her fellow rider, and went to find Billy and David.  David drove out and brought her in, with a nasty cut on her forehead.  Luckily, there didn’t appear to be any more serious injuries, but she might need stitches.

Thank goodness (again) for cell phones, because the horse stopped at its old stable, and we wouldn’t have known anything had happened without the call — at least, not immediately.  Now, people can get help much sooner.  The cell phone is a mixed blessing at times, but it’s sure nice in an emergency.

And it takes pretty good pictures when you don’t have your camera along, as the ones above testify.
