Snow on the Mountains   Leave a comment

What a lovely storm we had last night!  Better than half an inch of rain, and snow, snow, snow on the mountains.  It came down almost to the foothills.

I’m blogging late today, because Marion and I did a little shopping.  On the way home, we decided to drive out on the Panorama Vista Preserve, and see if we couldn’t get some pictures of the snowy Sierra — a rare sight, for Bakersfield.  (Marion says she lived in Bakersfield for several months before she realized we had mountains.)  It’s hard to get photos from the ranch, because there are too many trees in the way.

We quickly discovered that the snow looked a lot farther away on a cell phone camera than it did to the human eyeball.  It’s barely visible in this shot.

So I dialed up the telephoto on the cell phone, and, with a little tweaking, it didn’t turn out too badly.

It won’t last long, which is why we didn’t stop to get our real cameras.  But while it lasts, it is glorious.

The ranch was pretty wet this morning, but it’s been so long since we’ve had a good storm that it’s drying out fast.  The horses didn’t seem to mind.  When Billy went out and checked them late last night in the pouring rain, many of them were grouped companionably at the corner of their pens, instead of staying under their nice shelters.

Today it’s been pretty chilly, and we’ve spent most of our time in front of the fire — which is where I’m headed now.  I think my recliner is calling me.
