Just a little upriver from us is the crossing most people on horseback use to get to the other side of the river.  It’s too high for a horse only in the wettest years — like last year!

The river doesn’t look very big in this shot, but if you go up to the water’s edge . . .

. . . it looks a lot wider.  The spot where you climb out can be seen on the left.  As I took this picture, three large fish darted away to the right.  I am told people have been catching bass in this area, but they might well be the less desirable carp.

There is a white speck just to the right of center.  If I zoom in a little . . .

. . . it can be seen to be a birdhouse.  To be exact, it’s a wood duck box.  They’ve been planted all up and down the river to encourage the wood ducks to nest here.  In this spot, it’s not too likely to end up as firewood.

Here’s another shot from a little downriver, nicely framed by willows.

Even as low as it is, the Kern is a beautiful river.
