Last of the Wild Horses . . .   Leave a comment

. . . is looking in my window.

Yes, it’s the daylily again.  This is probably the last one of the year, as none of the others are showing signs of late bloom.  I like to put the blooming plants up on a stool near the front window.  This one does look as though it’s peering with interest into our living room.

This was actually taken a few days ago.  Today is gray and muggy, with rain predicted.  We hope it’ll stay to the west of us, because we’ve gotten a crew together to cover the haystacks — tomorrow.

Covering the haystacks is the last major routine job of the year.  It’s always interesting; Billy has it down to an art.  Covering eight hundred tons of hay is no small job.  Last year, though, when hay was unusually cheap, it was eleven hundred tons.

Bella had a rest day after the excitement of yesterday.  I walked her down to the round pen and asked her if she wanted to trot around;  “No, thank you,” she said, “I want to roll.”  And she did — five times clear over in quick succession.  The old-timers said a horse should be worth a hundred dollars a roll, but there has been inflation, after all.

Then she got a good brushing (which she needed) and her feet checked.  Last, I measured her head and girth for harness and bridle.  Both measurements were more than I thought; 35 inches from mouth corner to mouth corner, and 62 inches in girth.  I could barely get my five-foot measuring tape around her.

I was supposed to go to that driving clinic Saturday, but it’s been put off until next week.  If I don’t find some contacts for a good used harness, I’ll order a Biothane training harness from the Valley Vet catalog.  It’s proving to be really easy to find mini tack, but not easy at all for a 12-hand pony.  Darn it.
